Prayer Flags: A Message of Hope

Amy Kuschel. Breast Cancer Fund prayer flag.

Our prayer flags arrived!

As one of our favorite non-profits, and a partner in our “Gowns that Give” program, the Breast Cancer Fund works diligently to expose and eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer. Their preventative research alone inspires and gives hope, but we recently learned about “Climb Against the Odds”. We are blown away by its truly beautiful gesture.

“Climb Against the Odds” started in 1995 when founder, Andrea Martin, along with 16 other breast cancer survivors took on the challenge of climbing Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina. Facing mountains, both metaphoric and real, is a feat in itself, yet what each climber carried with them made this journey even more special. They filled their packs with prayer flags, dedicated in honor or memory of a loved one affected by cancer with a special prayer for love and healing. Since this first sacred trek, these prayer flags are flown at each annual expedition and Breast Cancer Fund events across the country. The prayer flags join amazing men and women who climb for themselves, for others, and for the future. They all climb because their lives are touched, in some way, by cancer.

We are so moved to take part in this immensely thoughtful program inspired by an old Himalayan tradition. In honor of three courageous women, we've dedicated our prayer flags to Amy's dear sister, Karen, her lovely sister-in-law, Peggy, and her soul-sister, Darcy... all three are recent breast cancer survivors. Their prayer flags are emblazoned with their names, a gold labyrinth, and a message of hope: “The wind carries our prayers of love, healing and remembrance. May all be well.”
